This is awesome.

So, I don't know if you guys have heard about this, but a group called Anonymous has been waging a war against the church of Scientology. They are leaking documents, shutting down Scientology websites, and trying to bring the church down virally. It is absolutely fascinating, and they want it all to come to a head on February 10th, with protests all over the country outside of Scientology Centers.

Here are some articles about it as well:

...your best bet is to go to Google and type in "anonymous scientology". Here ya go! Also, if you go to YouTube you can find all kinds of videos from Anonymous. Yay!

You can't do things out in the open because the church has fleets of lawyers to crack down on the pretense of copyright violation and IP violations, so doing so anonymously (even though these guys will hardly be able to maintain total anonymity to anyone that cared to do some true investigation and subpoena some server logs) is the only way you can really go about it.

Hopefully once they're done with the scientologists they can move on to the rest of the religious tards.

Anonymous isn't really a group. The name comes from the messageboards the insurgents use to discuss things, which are all anonymous. They aren't as united as a group, although there is a organized effort. Many of the Anonymous think the "war" is silly, and anyone trying to paint it as some sort of moral crusade is wrong. Anonymous does it for the lulz.

Here's the thing... blackhats working in the underground DO NOT POST IN PUBLIC FORUMS. Even as "anonymous".

This whole things smells of three fifteen year old kids who can "hax0r in visual basic" and run pre-written scripts they download from boards posting in a public forum suckering a bunch of AP/CNN/FOX/misc news organizations into thinking "OMG teh hax0rs fighting $cientology!".

Kind of like how all the idiots freaked out over the michaengelo virus about fifteen years ago and even had a "countdown clock" running on the television for the event.

They're going to be in Portland on 2/10 somewhere on Salmon St so I guess there's a Scientology center in Portland. The have a listing on PDX Craiglists and they tell you to bring a mask... Sounds awesome

Seumas, you're probably more right than not right. Remember that this is the same sensationalist media that taught us about the national epidemic of jenkem.

Sarah, I recommend this blog if you're interested in following this whole fiasco:

I just hope it's not a publicity stunt by Scientology to get attention, sympathy as a "persecuted religion," and personal info on "SP's" who join this protest thing. Then again, like any paramilitary cult, they'll probably be doing those things regardless... :/

Actually, some of these guys are serious hackers. There was actually just some infighting among them and the hackers were hacked by a group called the "regime" who then after only one day was hacked in retaliation by g00ns (again a group of hackers) and everything down to the regimes member's Name, work, phone, fax, and even SSN were compromised online. The first attack on CoS (church of scientology) was with what is called a denial of service attack. Basically they flooded CoS websites with packets and bandwidth issues. If you want to follow this issue thoroughly look up project "chanology" which is anonymous's name for it. They've done it successfully with FOX before. Anonymous is not all hackers. It is a name for internet people who display complete and total freedom of speech and expression (admittedly that turns mostly into pictures of tentacle porn and corpses). The ones who are actually making this a crusade though are hackers. Anonymous is not some crazy sleeper cell of hackers, just a group of geeks on 4chan and 711chan.org some of who can actually hack. Encyclopediadramatica.org and Uncyclopedia.org are the official wiki's for these groups but main coverage is on wikipedia. They do really want a legit add campaign.
